An effort in Rio Bravo, Texas, to recall Mayor Francisco Pena from his position was launched in March 2016.[1] Organizers submitted a petition with 260 signatures on July 22, 2016.[2] In September 2016, Jesus Vasquez filed a legal motion requesting placement of the recall on the November 2016 general election ballot. This motion followed Pena's decision to reject the petition after claiming that organizers did not submit enough valid signatures to force a recall.[3][4] On September 15, 2016, a judge ordered the city to proceed with review of the petition.[5] As of December 2016, this recall effort appeared to be abandoned and Ballotpedia discontinued active coverage. Recall supporters
Recall organizers pursued Pena's removal from office due to allegations that the mayor did not meet the city charter's residency requirements for the position. Pena's residency was an ongoing issue following his election in 2014. Supporters also argued that Pena has not met the charter's requirements for city commission meetings and filling the vacant city secretary office.[1][6]
