Jobs, education, taxes
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
Education - I have a background in both private and public education and have taught in the Dorchester County Public School system. A good education is the passport to success. We need to give teachers the freedom to do their job and reward them better for their professional service.
Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?
Teddy Roosevelt. He bucked the system by instituting needed reforms and he left us with the National Parks. He was strong on defense and an excellent diplomat (Nobel Peace Prize).
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
Integrity, civility, clear philosophy of government.
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Constituent services, knowledge of the issues, compromise.
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
The shooting down of a U2 spy plane piloted by Francis Gary Powers. Age 12 or 13.
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
Busboy. 2 years
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
Yes, it is where you learn your trade. Rising up through the ranks is a positive in most enterprises.
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
The creation of good paying jobs and the protection of the Chesapeake Bay.
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
The lack of compromise is one of the major drawbacks of our current political environment.
What process do you favor for redistricting?
Independent commission.
