The Judicial Update
Indiana

April 7, 2012

Indianapolis, Indiana: Following the stepping down of former Chief Justice Randall Shepard and the fresh appointment of Mark S. Massa to the Indiana Supreme Court, another justice will be leaving paving the way for Governor Mitch Daniels to appoint yet another judge.[1][2][3] Justice Frank Sullivan is unexpectedly stepping down from the court in order to pursue a teaching career at the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law on the IUPUI campus; he will begin teaching in the fall.[2] Sullivan's retirement will pave the way for Governor Daniels to appoint a third member to the five member court.[1]

This appointment will follow the standard procedure; Governor Daniels will choose from three finalists selected by the Indiana Judicial Nominating Commission.[3] There is pressure on Daniels to appoint a female justice to the court as Indiana is one of only three states, in addition to Iowa and Idaho, that does not have at least one female justice.[1] The Indiana Supreme Court has only had one female justice in its history: justice Myra Selby who served from 1995 to 1999.[1]
