Franklin Elia was a judge of the California 6th District Court of Appeal. He assumed office on September 29, 1988. He left office on June 30, 2022.

Elia was appointed to the court by Governor George Deukmejian and took the oath of office on September 29, 1988. He was retained by voters in 1990 and 2002.[1][2] He successfully ran for retention in 2014.[3]  He retired on June 30, 2022.[4]

Education

Elia graduated from Santa Clara University in 1972 and received his J.D. from the Santa Clara University Law School in 1975.[1]

Career

Elia began his legal career in 1975 as a deputy attorney general. He served in the Sacramento and San Francisco offices until 1980. During this time, he also served on special assignment as a deputy district attorney in the Sacramento District Attorney's Office. He became a senior assistant city attorney for Palo Alto, CA in 1980. Three years later, in 1983, he became a judge of the Santa Clara County Municipal Court after an appointment by Governor Deukmejian. He was promoted to the Superior Court of Santa Clara County in 1986 and he worked in this capacity until his appointment to the appellate court approximately two years later.[1]
