Fred Joseph Nichol (1912-1996) was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the District of South Dakota.

Nichol was nominated by President Lyndon Johnson on May 18, 1965, to a seat vacated by George Mickelson; he was confirmed by the Senate on June 9, 1965, and received commission the next day. He served as chief judge from 1966 until he assumed senior status on June 11, 1980. He served until his death on December 31, 1996.[1] Nichol was succeeded in this position by John B. Jones.
