An effort to recall Fred Schmidt from his elected position on the city council in Columbia, Missouri, was launched in May 2012.[1] The recall effort did not result in a recall election.[2] Schmidt represented the First Ward.
Reasons for recall
A group called Keep Columbia Free organized the recall effort. Mark Flakne served as president of the group at the time of the recall effort, and Mitch Richards was the group's treasurer. Schmidt became the target of a recall campaign due to his vote to re-establish an Enhanced Enterprise Zone Board (EEZ). The purpose of the EEZ was to use tax incentives to entice businesses to bring manufacturing jobs to Columbia.[3]
Path to the ballot
Recall organizers needed to collect 300 signatures from First Ward voters in order to force a recall election.[1]
