Frederic N. Smalkin was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. Smalkin joined the court on September 26, 1986, after a nomination by President Ronald Reagan (R). He served as chief judge from 2001 to 2003. He assumed senior status on January 8, 2003. Smalkin retired from the court on September 1, 2011.[1]

Smalkin was succeeded in this position by Richard Bennett.

Education

Smalkin received his undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1968 and his J.D. from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1971.[1]

Smalkin was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on August 15, 1986, to a seat vacated by James Rogers Miller, Jr. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on September 25, 1986, and received commission the next day. He served as chief judge from 2001 until he assumed senior status on January 8, 2003.[1] Smalkin was succeeded in this position by Richard Bennett.
