'm Dr. G Michael Lopez, born and raised in the vibrant community of Las Vegas, New Mexico, where I also spent my childhood on our family's ranch in Mora County. I am the son of Gilbert “Gillie” and Rosaline Lopez who were long-time educators in Las Vegas. During my high school years, I was deeply involved in athletics, earning letters in four sports. Throughout those formative years, I spent my summers working on our family ranch near Watrous, NM, learning the values of hard work and dedication.

Following my passion for both sports and academics, I attended the University of Notre Dame, where I was a walk-on on the football team. I pursued a dual major in electrical engineering and pre-med, graduating magna cum laude in 1974. To support my education, I worked with the highway department during my summer breaks, gaining invaluable experiences in various Northern New Mexico locations, including Santa Rosa, Springer, and Wagon Mound.

My academic journey continued at Stanford Medical School, where I graduated in the top 10% of my class in 1978. I then completed my internship and residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School/Parkland Memorial Hospital from 1978 to 1981. Fulfilling a lifelong goal, I returned to Northern New Mexico immediately after my training, to serve the community as a physician. Since 1981, I have been dedicated to the health and well-being of the people of Las Vegas, New Mexico, and the surrounding areas.
  • I am running because there are many issues which need to be addressed that have not been addressed by the incumbent senator. One of the most important is healthcare. We are in a healthcare crisis here in New Mexico but especially in Northern New Mexico. We have a serious shortage of doctors, nurses and other healthcare providers. Unfortunately his healthcare crisis has been brought on by our legislature including our current senator. Legislation that was passed in 2021, HB 75, has caused the loss of over 30% of her doctors from the state. It is also preventing new doctors from coming in.
  • There are multiple other reasons I am running including the need to improve our dismal metrics on childhood education.

    - Reform laws to attract and retain physicians in New Mexico.

    - Support women’s health and reproductive rights.

    - Advocate for patient-doctor decision-making in healthcare.

    - Enact legislation that is tough on drug dealers and violent criminals.

    - Support local businesses to create job opportunities.

    - Address water conservation.

-Establish an in-patient treatment center in Northern New Mexico to combat the opioid addiction crisis.

    - Help to secure adequate health care in rural and populated areas

    - Attract clean industry and business for job creation

- Plan for present and future water use

- Protect the environment

- Develop policies and grants to assist farmers and ranchers in agricultural development

-Push for funding to provide wider access to high-speed Internet throughout the state, especially in rural areas.

-I’m a firm believer in allocating more resources to education, especially for early childhood education. I also advocate for providing more educational opportunities for citizens who want to pursue careers in the trades

-Acequias are the lifeblood of Northern New Mexico and these infrastructures need more maintenance and resources to function efficiently
Better health care for all New Mexicans
Loss of so many health care workers from NM. We need legislation and strategies doctors, nurses and other health care back into the state
My great grandfather who was a NM state senator in the 1920s.
Yes. The governor should not have that sole power
The Las Vegas, nm Peace and Justice committee
Yes, we need financial transparency and government accountable to prevent wasteful spending
