G. Michael Westfall is a Utah Fifth Judicial District judge for the Cedar City District Court.[1] He was appointed to this position in August 2003 by Gov. Michael O. Leavitt and his term expires in 2018.[2]

Education

Westfall received his J.D. from the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University in 1981.[2]

Career

After earning his degree, Westfall was a partner of the firm of Gallian, Westfall, Wilcox and Welker. He also worked as a law clerk for the Utah County attorney's office. Westfall then served as a small claims judge pro tempore in Washington County from 1998 to 2003. He was appointed to the Fifth District Court by Governor Michael O. Leavitt in August of 2003.[2]

Elections

2012

Westfall stood for retention election in 2012. On November 6, 2012, Westfall was retained with 82.9 percent of the vote and a total of 51,200 votes.[3][4]

Judicial Performance Evaluation recommendation

The Utah Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission compiled information from attorneys, court staff and jurors about the performance of all judges up for retention in 2012. Judges were evaluated based on five criteria.

A judge must score at least 3 out of 5 in each of these categories to meet the minimum performance standard. 63 attorneys responded to the following questions.

  • Legal Ability: 4.03
  • Communication: 4.06
  • Integrity: 4.37
  • Judicial temperament: 4.11
  • Administrative: 3.67
