Campaign themes

2016

Farias' campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Public Safety: As your State Representative, Gabe Farias will work with local law enforcement agencies to ensure public safety is a top priority with his office. Making sure those that protect and serve have all of the necessary tools and funding will be a top priority.

Senior Citizen Support: Farias is committed to working with all legislators to ensure that our senior’s are taken care by fighting for funding for programs that will help improve their quality of life.

Veterans: Gabe Farias will follow in his fathers footsteps serving as one of the loudest and most diligent proponents for Veterans and their families. He will proudly take the baton from one of the hardest working veteran’s advocates in the history of the Texas House and support issues that affect the everyday lives of veterans and their families.

Public Education: District 118 has some of the poorest school districts in the state and Gabe Farias will fight to ensure that these lower-wealth school districts, and all school districts across the state, are able to keep up with increased educational demands.

Small Business/Job Creation: Having led a local Chamber of Commerce, Gabe Farias understands the needs of our Small Business owners and its employees. He will work to make sure all efforts are made to keep small business viable and to bring jobs to District 118.[2]

A special election for the position of Texas House of Representatives District 118 was called for November 3, 2015. A special runoff election was held on January 26, 2016.[8][9] The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was September 2.[10]

The seat was vacant following Joe Farias' (D) resignation on August 10, 2015.[11]

Anthony Alcoser (D), Robert A. Casias (R), Gabe Farias (D), Michael Holdman (R), John Lujan (R) and Tomas Uresti (D) faced off in a special election.[1] Since no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote, the top two vote-getters, Lujan and Uresti, met in a runoff election, which Lujan won.[9][12]
