Gary S. Austin was a federal magistrate judge with the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California. He was first appointed to the court on October 12, 2007, and retired on October 11, 2015.[1]

Education

Judge Austin earned a bachelor's degree from California State University at Fresno in 1972. He earned a J.D. degree from San Joaquin College of Law in 1976.[1]

Career

Austin began his career in 1976 as a law clerk and crier for U.S. District Judge M.D. Crocker. In 1977, he worked as a staff attorney in the Eastern District of California U.S. Federal Defenders Office. Later that year, Austin became a Fresno County Deputy District Attorney. He held this position until 1986, serving as a Senior Deputy District Attorney and a lead attorney for the Career Criminal Unit for the last two years of his tenure. Austin served as a Fresno Municipal Court Judge from 1986 to 1988, when he was elevated to the Fresno Superior Court. He served on the Superior Court until he became a magistrate judge in 2007.[2]
