Gary Dial

Gary Dial is the former presiding circuit court judge for the 1st Circuit Court in Missouri, serving from 1996 to 2020. Dial was appointed to the bench January 30, 1996, and was re-elected to serve in 1998, 2004, 2010, and 2016.[1] He retired on April 1, 2020.[2]
Education
Dial received his undergraduate degree from Northeast Missouri State University in 1977 and his J.D. from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1980.[1]
Career
Dial was originally appointed to the bench as a circuit judge for the 1st Circuit Court on January 30, 1996, and was elected in November of that same year to fill an unexpired term. Before his appointment to the bench, Dial was a private practice attorney in Memphis, served as a prosecuting attorney for Scotland County from 1981 to 1996, and was a city attorney for Memphis.[1][3]

Elections
2016
Missouri held general elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. A primary election took place on August 2, 2016. The filing deadline for those wishing to run in the primary was March 29, 2016. Judges running in a retention election on November 8 had to file by August 23.[4] Incumbent Gary Dial ran unopposed in the Missouri 1st Circuit general election.[5]

Dial ran unopposed for re-election to the 1st Judicial Circuit Court.[3] He was re-elected on November 2, 2010, receiving 100% of the vote.[6]

The 141 judges of the Missouri Circuit Courts are elected to six-year terms in partisan elections, except in the cities of Springfield, St. Louis, and Kansas City. At the end of their terms, judges must face re-election.[7]
The chief judge of each court is elected by the circuit and associate judges from among the sitting circuit judges.[7]
Qualifications
To serve on this court, a judge must be:
- a U.S. citizen for at least 10 years;
- a qualified state voter for at least three years;
- a resident of the circuit for at least one year;
- licensed to practice law in the state; and
- at least 30 years old.[7]
