Altenburg lives in Hidden Meadows with his wife and three children. He works as an endodontist in his own private practice. Altenburg earned a bachelor's degree in economics from California State University at Long Beach, his D.D.S. degree from Northwestern University in Chicago and his endodontic certification from Temple University in Philadelphia. He is a member of the American Association of Endodontists, California State Association of Endodontists, American Dental Association, California Dental Association and the Tri-County Dental Society.[2]

Three seats on the Escondido Union School District Board of Education were up for general election on November 4, 2014. Trustee Area 2 incumbent Joan Gardner ran unopposed and won re-election by default. In Trustee Area 4, incumbent Marty Hranek faced challenger Zesty Harper and lost his bid for re-election. No incumbent filed to run for re-election in Trustee Area 5, leaving Gary M. Altenburg, the only candidate who filed, to run unopposed, winning the election by default.

Results

This election was canceled due to lack of opposition. Newcomer Gary M. Altenburg was elected to the board by default.[1]
