Loustale has worked in the information technology field for over 30 years. He currently works as a career tech educator for the Butte County Office of Education. Previously, Loustale was the owner and operator of the business Computer Services and Repair. He has been involved in several community organizations, including the Chico Westside Little League, the St. Vincent de Paul Society and Ishi Toastmasters. Loustale and his wife have three children, all of whom attended the Chico Unified School District.[3]

Three at-large seats on the Chico Unified School District Board of Education were up for general election on November 4, 2014. Incumbents Eileen Robinson and Kathleen E. Kaiser ran for re-election against candidates Gary M. Loustale and Cynthia Van Auken. Robinson and Kaiser won their bids for re-election, and Loustale joined them on the board after also winning the election.
