Brig Gen. (R) Gary Pendleton is a former Republican member of the North Carolina House of Representatives, representing District 49 from 2014 to 2016. He was first appointed to the chamber on August 19, 2014, to replace Jim Fulghum (R), who died three weeks after being diagnosed with cancer.

The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was February 28, 2014. Gary Pendleton was unopposed in the Republican primary, while Kim Hanchette defeated Derek Kiszely in the Democratic primary. Pendleton defeated Hanchette in the general election.[11][12]
