Gary W. Bastian
Gary W. Bastian was a judge on the Minnesota Second Judicial District court. He was appointed by Governor Arne Carlson in 1997. His term expired in January 2019.[1]
Biography
Education
Bastian received his B.S. degree in sociology and political science from the University of Wisconsin at River Falls in 1970. He then received his J.D. from the William Mitchell College of Law in 1974.[2]
Career
Judge Bastian began his legal career in 1976 as a research staff director for the Minnesota State Senate. He then joined the Bureau of Mediation Services in 1985 and worked as the director of the Minnesota School Labor Management Committee until 1987. From 1987 to 1991, he was a private practice attorney. He then served as the mayor of the City of Maplewood from 1990 to 1998. During that time, from 1991 to 1998, he also served in various positions (such as commissioner and general counsel) at the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry.[2]

Bastain ran unopposed in the general election November 6, 2012. He received 98.50 percent of the vote.[3]
