2017
Young's website highlighted the following campaign themes:[3]
Workforce development
- Excerpt: "We need to be proactive about training our citizens to be job ready; particularly those that possess variable barriers to entering the workforce. These barriers can be lack of education, lack of training, a criminal record, or other variables. But, we must be intentional in our efforts to cultivate an ecosystem where folks are successful in life, by preparing them for success. We can create jobs, but we need a capable workforce to fill and sustain them."
Economic opportunity
- Excerpt: "A person cannot support their family, or save to send their kids to college, making $7-12 an hour. We must make sure that we are being strategic in the type of jobs that we put within our community. Meaning, we must work to bring jobs that current residents of these communities can obtain, now; or, go in hand with the workforce development that prepares them for these jobs. We have to make sure that we offer sustainable opportunities for ALL citizens, regardless of their cultural, generational or ideology divides."
Housing
- Excerpt: "Along with fair jobs, we need housing that's affordable and attractive enough so citizens of all income levels can live together; therefore, ending the cycle of being socioeconomically segregated in Charlotte-Mecklenburg. When we can infuse a community with jobs that range from 5-figures to 6-figures in the same corridor, we now enable the opportunity for people of various income levels to live and work together. Our District, and City as a whole, need more areas that create a blended and fair socioeconomic climate for all to congregate or live together."
