Five seats on the Gaston County Schools school board were up for general election on November 4, 2014.

Dot Cherry, Nick Huffman, Rebecca Abernethy Schwindeman and Jerry J. Bostic competed for an at-large seat. In the Southpoint District, at-large board member Chris Howell faced Wil Neumann and Rae Marie Pritchard. Incumbent Mark A. Stephens faced challengers Lee Dedmon and Daniel Ware in the Gastonia District. Incumbent Kevin Collier ran unopposed in the Riverbend District. Incumbent Kaye Gribble ran against newcomer Catherine Bailey Roberts in the Dallas Township District. Cherry, Howell, Dedmon, Collier and Roberts were elected to their respective seats.

Gaston County Schools is located in Gaston County, North Carolina. The county seat of Gaston County is Gastonia. Gaston County had a population of 209,420 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[1] In the 2011-2012 school year, Gaston County Schools was the ninth-largest school district in North Carolina and served 31,696 students.[2]

Demographics

Gaston County underperformed in comparison to the rest of North Carolina in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 18.0 percent of Gaston County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 26.8 percent for North Carolina as a whole. The median household income in Gaston County was $43,220 compared to $46,450 for the state of North Carolina. The poverty rate in Gaston County was 17.0 percent compared to 16.8 percent for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information

As of the 2014 election, the Gaston school board consisted of nine members elected to four-year terms. Seven members are elected by geographic electoral districts and two are elected at-large. There was no primary election and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Five seats were on the ballot in 2014.[4]

The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was August 1, 2014.[5]
