Gay marriage opponents in Maine file signatures

AUGUSTA, Maine: On Friday, July 31, opponents of same-sex marriage filed about 100,000 signatures with the Maine Secretary of State in order to qualify the Maine Same-Sex Marriage People's Veto for the November 2, 2009 statewide ballot in Maine as a veto referendum.[1]
Earlier in 2009, Maine became the country's fifth state to allow same-sex marriage.
55,087 signatures are required to qualify a measure for the ballot in Maine. Since Referendum 71 in Washington may well be in signature trouble, the Maine ballot measure is likely to be ground-zero in 2009 for the national debate over same-sex marriage.
