Gene Carter
Gene Carter (b. 1935) was a federal judge with the U.S. District Court for the District of Maine. Carter joined the District of Maine in 1983 after an appointment from President Ronald Reagan (R). At the time of his appointment, Carter was serving on the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. He assumed senior status on January 2, 2003. His service ended when he died on November 17, 2021.[1]
Education
Born in Milbridge, Maine, Carter earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Maine in 1958, and his LL.B. from New York University School of Law in 1961.[1]
Military service
Carter served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Reserve JAG Corps from 1962 to 1968.[1]
Professional career
Carter began his career as a law clerk to Judge J. Spencer Bell of the Fourth Circuit from 1961 to 1962. He went on to serve for a period in the military as a JAG officer. Carter returned to civilian life and private practice in Bangor, Maine, in 1965. He spent fifteen years in private practice before joining the Maine Supreme Judicial Court in 1980.[1]
Judicial career
District of Maine
Carter was nominated to the federal court by President Ronald Reagan on May 26, 1983, to fill the seat vacated by Edward Gignoux. The U.S. Senate confirmed him on June 22, 1983, and he was commissioned the next day. He was the twelfth federal judge of the United States District Court for the District of Maine. Carter served as chief judge of the court from 1989 to 1996. Carter assumed senior status on January 2, 2003. Carter was succeeded in this position by John Woodcock. His service ended on November 17, 2021, when he died.[1]
Maine supreme court
Carter was appointed to the Maine Supreme Judicial Court on September 15, 1980, by Governor Joseph Brennan, a Democrat. He served on this court until July 4, 1983.[1][2]
