The tables below summarize general fund revenue sources in the 50 states. The information below comes from the United States Census Bureau and the National Association of State Budget Officers (NASBO). NASBO compiles this information and publishes it in the group's annual State Expenditures Report.[1][2]

The figures below apply to state general funds. According to NASBO, a general fund is "the predominant fund for financing a state's operations. Revenues are received from broad-based state taxes."[2]

The three primary sources of general fund revenue are personal income tax, sales tax, and corporate income tax collections. Taken together, these three sources accounted for an estimated 78.7 percent of all general fund revenues in fiscal year 2014, which is roughly equal to the 78.5 percent reported in fiscal year 2013.[3]
