I was born in Los Angeles but raised in Mexico until age 6. Upon returning to the United States at the age of 7, I faced an identity crisis because, in many ways, my life experiences were similar to that of a first-generation immigrant. As the first in my family to learn English, I was often my parents’ primary interpreter and translator. Although my parents came to this country seeking a better life for their children, it was not easy. My family lived in a roach-infested motel in East Los Angeles and moved from apartment to apartment for six years until we finally made it out of the waitlist for public subsidized housing. I lived in the Nueva Maravilla Public Housing Development (Maravilla Projects) through the rest of my teenage years. Not only did public housing ensure that my family didn’t end up on the streets, but food assistance and Medi-Cal were my family’s saving grace. This situation is not unique to me; this is the story of tens of thousands of families across our state who still live in these challenging economic situations. I’m running because our communities deserve a fearless voice in Sacramento who will put people first and relentlessly fight for progressive solutions to the housing crisis, underfunded public school system, climate change, and broken healthcare system.
  • Quality Public Education: Support a more equitable per-pupil funding model based on enrollment, not attendance, and improved resources for students with unique needs to ensure all students have access to a quality education.
  • Healthcare for All: Support a single-payer healthcare system to ensure all Californians have access to affordable and accessible healthcare, regardless of employment or immigration status.
  • Affordable Housing: Support a multi-tiered approach that fast-tracks the development of long-term affordable housing, supports a social housing model, strengthens tenant protections, expands rent control, removes caps on residential density, and increases access to mental health and substance abuse programs.
Some public policy issues I’m passionate about include affordable housing, public education, public transportation, healthcare, and unincorporated communities.
At the age of 16, I was a student tutor at Garfield High School.
Growing up in East Los Angeles, the largest unincorporated community in California, I have directly felt the disproportionate impacts of not having true local representation or a local voice - which have resulted in the innumerable injustices faced by me and my neighbors, such as environmental discrimination, increased health disparities, poor public schools, and economic inequity.
Yes, while I believe it’s beneficial for legislators to have previous experience in government and politics, it should never be a requirement. We need legislators with fresh new perspectives in the People’s House - individuals who are passionate about serving the community and are willing to stand up to corporations and special interests to ensure the health, wellness, and quality of life of all Californians.
Yes, I believe it’s necessary to build relationships with other legislators and the executive administration to pass the critical legislation needed to improve the lives of Californians more successfully. However, building strong relationships with community-based partners and constituents in my District is equally important.
I would introduce a bill that focuses on implementing more transparency measures for tenants renting in California. Currently, we have a one-way system where tenants are the only ones required to submit confidential information such as their credit scores, current employment, salary, references, and other information that indicates whether they would be “responsible” tenants. However, most landlords hide behind property management companies. It’s equally important for tenants to know who they are renting from and whether there have been any past incidents with other tenants that would make tenants reconsider applying for that rental unit.
