Genevieve will always remember her roots in Northeast Ohio. Originally from Lakewood, she grew up along with a twin brother, raised by a single mom. After living in other parts of the country, and even a semester of college in Ireland, Genevieve is proud to call Lorain County home. Professionally and in years of service to others, she has demonstrated leadership and integrity.

Genevieve Flieger spent more than 10 years on the frontlines working to help people buy their first home or stay in their homes. As a senior loan processor, she saw firsthand the unique challenges that are facing first time homeowners. Now, she works at a non-profit organization that distributes and delivers food into the community. Genevieve sees food pantries as only one part of solution to a widespread, systemic problem.

In over a decade of volunteering at Angel’s Haven Horse rescue, Genevieve had the opportunity to teach riding and horsemanship skills to numerous groups including Youth Outdoors and Girl Scouts. Her responsibilities covered everything from training horses, daily stall cleaning and feeding, horse first aid, assisting in fundraisers, managing horse shows, leading community outreach events and creating programs for the volunteers. She has volunteered for candidates and issues ranging from labor’s right to organize and collectively bargain, immigrant human rights, clean water and and most recently our constitutional amendment to protect reproductive freedom.
  • Food I see every day the need for food security in my community. Prices have skyrocketed and resources to obtain food have disappeared since COVID-19. Food Pantry charities can't solve this problem when the source is corporate greed. Lawmakers have a responsibility to make sure that every job pays a living wage, and to enforce consumer protections so that every family can afford to eat.
  • The Housing Crisis. When 2 generations of Americans feel like they can't and will never be able to afford a home, we have a problem. It wasn't that long ago that a single income at a regular job was enough to own a home. Now, between rising prices, interest rates, investment companies buying up single family houses and other obstacles to qualifying for a mortgage, the challenge of buying a house is nearly insurmountable for too many Ohioans. Government can and should crack down on predatory rental practices and create a renter's bill of rights. Ohio can increase its statewide programs such as down payment assistance for first-time home buyers
  • Medicine If a doctor says you need a drug you need to save your life or improve the quality of your life, you should be able to take that drug. This isn't complicated. Prescription drug prices have become so outrageous that every day there are stories of people cutting their pills in half or making a choice between their medicine and utility bills. Lawmakers have the power to negotiate prices and hold pharmaceutical companies accountable for their greed.
Environmental protection and combating climate Change.
We need leadership that understands the urgency of climate change and I vow to support big, bold action for renewable energy, mass transportation, protecting our natural resources and more. I personally turned a large section of my yard into a pollinator garden with all native plants to attract Monarch butterflies and a number of bees.
I am honest, compassionate and kind. When the job involves coming up with solutions to problems that might not personally impact you, empathy is vital to understanding another view point.
Elected officials must remember that they are public servants and their job is to represent their voters. Legislators should be responsive when residents contact them and should put their duty to serve above any personal agenda.
I remember the space shuttle Challenger exploded when I was about 4 years old.
I believe it is essential for leaders in government to have experience dealing with modern challenges and real life issues. Too often we see people spend decades in government and lose touch with the day-to-day problems that citizens face. Instead of asking if one needs government experience to be in politics, the question of long-time politicians should be when was the last time they applied to regular job. When was the last time they had to make a choice between a prescription or a utility bill? Do they know how much today's tuition is at the college or university they graduated from?
Two men walk into a bar.

You'd think the second one would have ducked.
