Transforming our healthcare system

Giving back to our veterans

Protecting our digital privacy
I have worked in the healthcare field for most of my career. I am passionate about policies that put patients at the center of the healthcare system. Additionally, I am deeply concerned about the erosion of our personal privacy. Technology has transformed our lives making difficult tasks simple, but it has come at the cost of our privacy. There are so many negative things that can be done with our data, and we should have significant control over it.
I admire and respect Senator John McCain. He was a true public service; he was pragmatic in his policy; he worked across the aisle; and he stood firm when he needed to.
A servant's heart, dedication to constituents, integrity, honesty, and transparency are vitally important for elected leaders.
A core responsibility is to serve your constituents, which means reading bills before you vote on them, listening to all sides of an issue, and putting people over party.
It wasn't the first event in my lifetime, but it's the first I remember most vividly, the Oklahoma City bombing. I turned 13 days before the bombing, and I was home sick from school that day. I watched it unfold in real time. As a young girl, I couldn't understand how someone could be so evil or hate others so much. That instead of trying to change the world and the things in it that concern you that you would instead turn to violence. Since that day I've watched too many acts of violence unfold in real-time; I think we all have. It is no less sickening then it was that day, and it speaks to larger problems within our country that need to be addressed.
I got my first job at 15 at a fabric store. I worked weekends and a few evenings after school. I've been working ever since.
It is definitely Christmas. Christmas was a huge holiday for my family, with my mom ensuring it was special every year, even when money was tight.
Fiction - the Harry Potter series: great writing, a story of good overcoming evil, and it transports you to another world.
Non-fiction - Hillbilly Elegy: great view into a much misunderstood culture within our country
Maryland is an incredibly gerrymandered state. Unfortunately, gerrymandering disenfranchises voters. Technology affords us the opportunity to use data to draw lines that are fair to everyone. I believe we should use sophisticated data models to draw reasonable districts.
It was organized to be a deliberative body that discusses issues and works together to build policy that supports everyone. In recent years, the House has lost this deliberative quality, instead becoming incredibly partisan, but it can be great again with the right leadership in place.
I believe we need representatives from across a broad spectrum of careers that bring differing viewpoints to the table. However, the space between good ideas and policy is great, and we need representatives who understand how to craft policy with a view towards avoiding unintended consequences.
I would serve on the Veteran's Affairs committee, because I believe the VA needs more transparency and stronger oversight. I would also serve on Energy and Commerce to work towards fixing our healthcare system.
I strongly support term limits. Serving in congress is a privilege, not a guaranteed job for life. But we must be thoughtful about how long the term limits are. If they are too short then very little will get done and individuals will not want to serve. If they are too long, we will have the same issues we have now.
Representative Elise Stefanik - she has worked across the aisle and believes as I do that congress is not intended to be a lifelong position.
