|- .Studies have shown that children made little to no progress during virtual learning, especially in disadvantaged and English Language Learner homes. The Spanish speaking community, which make up about 75% of our district, were hugely affected. Yet, our teacher unions lobbied and achieved one of the longest school closures in the world. This was unopposed by the incumbent in this position and the rest of the board for a very long time. Our board has largely let UTLA manage decisions for our district and this has led to families leaving. Declining enrollments hurt the students that stay. If elected, I will support Superintendent Carvalho in regaining control of public education with kids and families first in mind.
- School closures and mandates have caused a great deal of suffering and social isolation for our children, turning into an emotional health crisis. I will vote for hiring professional counselors on a part-time or on an as-needed basis, and make student-centered decisions to return a sense of normalcy to our schools. To address the learning loss, we need to use the resources that we have in efficient ways, and involve parents in determining what resources would be best. We must also support children with learning differences with robust resources, tutors, and teachers assistants. Parent input in all of this is critical and I am committed to involving parents to make sure that our limited resources are used in the best way possible.
- I will strive to make campuses safer for children by maintaining our campus officers, not downsizing. The incumbent in board district 4 voted to defund our campus police and that measure passed. On campus safety has declined as a result. Being a parent of school aged children helps me see the realities of our situation as they impact children and I will not fall into the trap of trending social media campaigns. I will use common sense and protect our most vulnerable.
As an immigrant and through my path of living in multiple countries, I was able to develop a better understanding of people with various cultures and backgrounds.
