Our city deserves positive, action-oriented leadership in the Mayor's office and I will strive to bring this every day. I have a high bar for city management and city services, and respect for real challenges faced by our households. I value community input and prioritize thoughtful development, more support for our schools, public safety, and stewardship of taxpayer funds.

I will work with the people to: - Plan long-term so we’re not caught off-guard by predictable needs. - Get public input before major decisions are made. - Support only thoughtful development that values our natural surroundings and doesn't overwhelm us with traffic. - Responsibly manage growth. My experience includes serving 13 years on the city council (1996-2009) and following city actions since. I recognize that circumstances have changed, and understand what works and what does not.

Professionally, I have worked for 32 years at a company that plans and builds utilities for municipal and private construction projects, where I am a manager. This gives me a unique knowledge of how developers do business and how to improve the city's ability to work with them.

Personally, I have lived with my wife Emmy in Black Diamond for 37 years. We raised our family here and have grandchildren here.
  • Solve our City’s Public Safety Crisis

Black Diamond’s Fire and EMS staffing have decreased despite population growth. Funding commitments from developers for more staff have not been enforced by the city. Ignoring years of warnings, the city built a second fire station that now sits empty. Prior to construction, I was one of the first residents to tell the City that building the now useless Fire Station was the wrong decision.

The current administration's mis-management of fire services has wasted millions of dollars, and decimated our services. Now those in office propose doubling your City property taxes next year to offset their mistakes.
  • Solve Our City’s Road and Walkways Crisis City hall is currently rushing behind-the-scenes changes to road plans that will result in much more traffic in existing residential neighborhoods and a decrease in public safety. Our neighborhoods must carefully balance traffic and walkability, and the city must do more to make our roads and walkways safe. We must also avoid making existing neighborhoods speedways for through-traffic. I will make more road plans public sooner. We will work together put in place policies so that traffic from growth does not harm our existing homes. I will oppose proposals to turn existing business into roads through eminent domain.
  • Solve Our City’s Growth Management Crisis Unfortunately, the declining fire & EMS safety service, and increasing problems with our roads and walkways are the tip of the iceberg. Poor planning and ineffective city management are causing declining public services; delays in key road and park projects; and capital funding gaps for police, courts, and our water utility. Schools needed to serve growth are not funded and the people's reasonable request to have developers fund a larger portion of schools have been ignored. City Hall is shifting developer costs to tax and rate payers. Solutions require better planning and standing up to special interests.
I am passionate about having a well-managed government that works for the people of Black Diamond. Black Diamonds small-town character is worth protecting. We have an amazing town where people are friendly, it is relaxing being away from the big city, and we are surrounded by forests and wildlife habitat.
The city is not about the city's finances or the city staff. The city government is about the quality of life and safety of residents. An important guiding principle is to seek facts and details in writing with evidence before making decisions. Another is to listen to the public and act according to their wishes.
My personal interests have always included local community efforts, from the time I joined the volunteer fire department as a teenager to now when I follow the detailed contracts, expenditures, proposals, and decisions from each Black Diamond City Council meeting. My experience and knowledge will help me be successful. Even more so, the people will benefit from my interest in communicating with a wide variety of people about topics of city interest and then working with them to improve the city government.
Black Diamond follows the mayor-council form of government in Washington state. The mayor is the chief administrative officer who is responsible for all administrative functions. This means carrying out the city's laws and supervising city staff. The mayor is responsible for presenting a balanced budget for Council review and approval. The mayor must also be a leader who cares and takes the time to communicate with constituents.
My goals include keeping Black Diamond, both new and old, a beautiful place to live.
Our city has a large amount of land owned by developers and we must manage growth carefully. Growth must pay for itself, protect our natural environment, and avoid causing harm to existing residents.
Black Diamond needs to do more than talk about transparency and government accountability. Today, many city decisions are pre-determined in closed-door meetings before the public knows anything about them.

I will establish and support policies that require that city information and plans be available sooner. We must put in place more ways that residents can easily find and receive this information.
