George Altgelt
George Altgelt was a member of the Laredo City Council in Texas, representing District 7. Altgelt assumed office in 2015. Altgelt left office on December 30, 2020.
Altgelt ran for re-election to the Laredo City Council to represent District 7 in Texas. Altgelt won in the general election on November 8, 2016.
Altgelt ran for Place 9 of the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in 2014. He won 9 percent of the vote in that race, placing third of three candidates competing for the seat.[1]
Although city council elections in Laredo are officially nonpartisan, Altgelt is known to be affiliated with the Green Party.[2]
Biography
Altgelt obtained a B.A. in political science from Texas A&M International University and a J.D. from St. Mary's University.[3]
As of his run for re-election in 2016, Altgelt was managing partner of his own law firm, Altgelt Law Office. His professional experience also includes work as managing partner of the law firm Altgelt, Cook, Loree, Hernandez & Lipscomb and a felony drug court prosecutor and environmental prosecutor for the Webb County Attorney and District Attorney.[4]
Altgelt has served as a board member for the conservation organization Big River Foundation and the cultural heritage group River Pierce Foundation. He and his wife, Rosa Elia Gonzalez de Altgelt, have two daughters, Emily and Joyce.[4][5]

The city of Laredo, Texas, held elections for city council on November 8, 2016. The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was August 22, 2016. Four of the seven city council seats were up for election. The District 4 race advanced to a runoff election on December 17, 2016. Incumbent George Altgelt defeated Juan Chavez in the Laredo City Council District 7 general election.[8]

The city of Laredo, Texas, held a nonpartisan special election for city council on March 7, 2015. A runoff election took place on April 25, 2015. The filing deadline for candidates who wished to run in this election was January 5, 2015. The city held the special election to fill the District 7 seat of former council member Jorge Vera, who was recalled from office on November 4, 2014, following his arrest for drug possession on August 1, 2014. In the general election, candidates included Juan Chavez, Hector Lee Patiño, Arturo Pantoja, Daniel "Danny" Reyes, Guillermo (Memo) Castro and George J. Altgelt. Because no candidate received a majority in the general election, the top two candidates - Patiño and Altgelt - faced each other in a runoff election on April 25, 2015. Altgelt defeated Patiño in the runoff.[9][10]
