George C. Sexton
George C. Sexton was a circuit court judge for the Twenty-Third Circuit Court in Tennessee. He was appointed to the court by former Governor Phil Bredesen on February 12, 2003, to replace retired Judge Allen W. Wallace. In 2006, Sexton was re-elected to serve an eight year term that expired in 2014.[1][2] He also presided over the Twenty-Third District Chancery Court.[3]
Sexton did not seek re-election in 2014.[4]
Education
Prior to attending college, Sexton served in the U.S. Army from 1971 to 1974. He received his undergraduate degree in political science from Austin Peay State University in 1978 and his J.D. degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1980.[5]
Career
Sexton began his career in 1981 as a private practice attorney in Dover, Tennessee. In 1983, he became an assistant district attorney general, serving first in the child support enforcement division of the 21st Judicial Circuit and then in the 23rd Judicial District. He worked in that position until September 1, 1998. He then became a judge for the Stewart County General Sessions Court and the Stewart County Juvenile Court, effective January 18, 1999. He worked in that capacity and as a city judge for the cities of Dover and Cumberland City in Tennessee until his 2003 appointment to the Twenty-Third Circuit Court. He was also working as an attorney in his solo practice at the time of his judicial appointment.[1][5]
