George Harold Carswell (1919-1992) was a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit and the United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida. He was also nominated to the Supreme Court of the United States in 1970; this nomination was rejected by the Senate, 51-45.[1] Carswell died on July 13, 1992.

Judicial nominations and appointments

Fifth Circuit

Carswell was nominated to the Fifth Circuit by President Richard Nixon on May 12, 1969, to a new seat created by 82 Stat. 184; he was confirmed by the Senate on June 19, 1969, and received his commission on June 20th. He resigned on April 20, 1970.[1]

Northern District of Florida

Carswell was nominated to the Northern District of Florida by President Dwight Eisenhower on March 6, 1958, to a seat vacated by Dozier DeVane; he was confirmed by the Senate on March 31, 1958, and received his commission on April 10, 1958. He served as chief judge from 1958 he was elevated to the Fifth Circuit on June 27, 1969.[1] Carswell was succeeded in this position by David Middlebrooks.
