I am a US Marine veteran and retired Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer with 27 years of service. I served 13 years on the Board of Education, prior to being Elected to the county Commission. I have served 14 years as a Commissioner and I am running for RE-Election to an 8th term. I have served the last 4 years as the Chairman of the board and I am the first District Representative to ever serve as Chairman. I have a Masters Degree in Public Administration from the University at Charlotte, a BS degree from Charlotte, an Associates degree in Police Science from Cpcc and a Associate degree ain Correctional Science from Cpcc. I have served as Chairman of the board or President of a number of organizations, to include the Centralina Council of Grover’s, Saint Paul Baptist church, an North State Law Officers Association. A member of the board of directors of Center City Partners, ASC, University City Partners, NC Association of County Commissioners, Vice Chair Large Urban County Caucus and the Justice and Public Safety committee and I serve as Chair of the NC Justice and Public Safety committee.
  • People should vote for me because I have demonstrated my commitment to this community by having served in the military, as a police officer and as a servant leader. I have a heart for service, it is my true passion.
  • I deliver. Since being on the board, District 3 has seen additional parks and green spaces added to the district. New schools have been added. A regional recreation center, new swimming pool, a new community resource center is on the way, as well as a new library. These are but a few things that I have delivered to the district, along with the many other things I have championed throughout MECKLENBURG county.
  • I am asking the residents of District 3 to elect me to another term so that can continue to do the work of ensuring that your voice is at the table fighting for Affordable housing, keeping our community safe, ensuring that our children receive a high quality education and continuing to bring jobs to our community. I am asking for your vote.
While I am passionate about a number of issues, I am most passionate about homelessness. After tent city accrued, I helped to organize a comprehensive study of Homelessness, lead by Gene Woods of Atrium and Cathy Bassent from BOFA, who lead the Task Force. This lead to a nearly two year study and the adoption of Mecklenburg County Homelessness plan.

Affordable housing is another area that I am passionate about. When I became Chairman 4 years ago, Mecklenburg County did not do affordable housing. With a change on the board, the board began investing in affordable housing. The need is great and we have a deficit of affordable housing units in our community. The board currently invest in Naturally occurring affordable housing, as well as investing in other developments to increase the number of affordable units. This year, the county is investing more than 20 million dollars into affordable housing.
