George F. Phelan

George F. Phelan is a former probate and family court associate justice for the Nantucket Probate and Family Court in Nantucket County, Massachusetts.[1] He was nominated to the court by former Governor Deval Patrick in November 2009, to fill the vacancy created by Angela M. Ordonez's nomination to the Norfolk Probate and Family Court.[2] Phelan's nomination was confirmed by the Governor's Council in December 2009, and he was sworn into office in July 2010.[3][4] He left office in September 2020.[5]
Education
Phelan received his undergraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts, his master's in city planning from the Ohio State University, and his J.D. from the New England School of Law.[4]
Military service
Phelan started his law career in the U.S. Army's Judge Advocate General's Corps. Prior to his confirmation, Phelan, a U.S. Army colonel, served in Afghanistan and as a rule of law advisor for the U.S. State Department in Iraq.[3]
Career
Before he joined the Nantucket Probate and Family Court, Phelan maintained a solo practice in Fall River, Massachusetts, specializing in probate, family, and elder law.[3]
