George L. Russell, III is the chief judge for the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. He joined the court in 2012 after a nomination from Barack Obama. Prior to joining the court, Russell served as a judge for the Eighth Circuit Court for Baltimore City, Maryland.[1][2]

Early life and education

Russell earned B.A. in 1988 from Morehouse College. He earned his J.D. from University of Maryland School of Law in 1991.[3]

Professional career

Russell began his career as a law clerk to the Honorable Robert Bell from 1991-1992. He went on to private practice at Hazel & Thomas PC from 1992 to 1994. He served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the District of Maryland from 1994-1999. He returned to private practice at the Law Office of Peter G. Angelos, PC from 2000-2002 before returning to a post as a Assistant United States Attorney from 2002-2007. He took his current post on the Maryland Eighth Circuit in 2007.[3] Russell became chief judge of the court in 2024.Cite error: Closing </ref> missing for <ref> tag He is nominated to fill the seat vacated by Peter Messitte.[4] In 2024, Russell became the chief judge of the court.[2]

Russell was rated Substantial Majority Qualified, Minority Not Qualified by the American Bar Association. He had a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee on January 26, 2012 and you can find his Committee Questionnaire available here and his Questions for the Record available here.[5]

On Monday, May 14, 2012, Russell was confirmed by the United States Senate to the United States District Court for the District of Maryland with a voice vote.[6][7]
