As of 2016, George Marcus was a businessman in California whose career centered on real estate development and banking. He was a co-founder of Marcus & Millichap Inc. and the founder of Essex Property Trust Inc.[1][2]
Career
Marcus graduated from San Francisco State University with a B.S. in economics in 1965. He also graduated from both the Harvard Business School of Owners/President Management Program and the Georgetown University Leadership Program.[1]
Marcus co-founded Marcus & Millichap Inc. and founded Essex Property Trust Inc. Both companies managed real estate and apartment complexes. As of 2016, he was the director of Marcus & Millichap Inc. and has served as its co-chairman since 1971. Marcus founded The Marcus & Millichap Company and co-founded SummerHill Apartment Communities, Inc., where he served as Chairman, in 2001. He was a presiding Independent Director at Essex Property Trust Inc. Marcus was also one of the founders of Directors of Plaza Commerce Bank and has served as independent director of Greater Bay Bancorp. From 1987 to 1998, Marcus served as a director of Mid-Peninsula Bank.[1][2]
As of 2016, Marcus was a member of the Board of Regents of The University of California, the Real Estate Roundtable, and the Policy Advisory Board of U.C. Berkeley Center for Real Estate and Urban Economics.[1][5]

The Center for Responsive Politics listed Marcus as one of the top 50 donors for the 2016 federal election cycle. As of October 2016, Marcus spent a total of $3,171,100 in contributions related to federal elections. Of those contributions, $2.3 million went to political action committees, including the House Majority PAC, Senate Majority PAC, and American Bridge 21st Century. As of 2016, Marcus contributed primarily to Democratic and liberal causes.[6][7][8]
California contributions
The California Secretary of State listed Marcus as a major donor within California politics. During the 2016 election cycle, Marcus contributed $527,450. Along with giving to a number of city council candidates, legislative candidates, and California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, Marcus gave his largest statewide contribution of 2016, $250,000, in support of California Proposition 63, Background Checks for Ammunition Purchases and Large-Capacity Ammunition Magazine Ban (2016).[9]
