George P. McCarthy is a judge on the Athens County Court of Common Pleas in Athens County, Ohio. He was appointed to the court by Governor John Kasich to fill a vacancy created by the retirement of former judge Michael Ward. McCarthy assumed office on May 28, 2013, and ran in the retention election in November 2014 to serve out the remainder of Ward's unexpired term.[1] McCarthy was successful, and his term expired in 2023.

McCarthy ran for re-election in 2016.[2] The general election took place on November 8, 2016.

Biography

McCarthy received his undergraduate degree from the University of New Hampshire in 1987 and his J.D. from Ohio Northern University in 1990.[1]

The 391 judges of the Ohio Courts of Common Pleas are all selected in an identical manner. Qualified individuals wishing to join the bench must participate in partisan primary elections followed by nonpartisan general elections.[7]

The chief judges of the Ohio Courts of Common Pleas are chosen by peer vote and serve for one year.[7]

Qualifications
To serve on an appellate or general jurisdiction court, a judge must be:[7]

  • a district or county resident (for court of appeals and common pleas judges);
  • at least six years practiced in law; and
  • under the age of 70.

Under the Ohio Constitution, a judge who reaches 70 years of age may be assigned by the chief justice to active duty, receiving payment on a per-day basis in addition to whatever retirement benefits he or she is entitled to.
