George Stephanopoulos is an anchor for ABC News and the host of This Week, a Sunday news show on ABC. A former advisor and communications director to former President Bill Clinton, Stephanopoulos joined ABC News as a correspondent and analyst in 1997.[1] He also is a co-anchor of Good Morning America.[2]

Biography

Stephanopoulos began working in Washington, D.C., with then-Rep. Ed Feighan (D-Ohio) and also worked on the 1988 presidential campaign of Michael Dukakis.[3] In 1991, Stephanopoulos joined Clinton's campaign as a deputy campaign manager for communications. Stephanopoulos served as an advisor to Clinton in the White House during his first and second term.

In 1999, Stephanopoulos published All Too Human, a book about his time with Clinton. According to The Washington Post, the book chronicled Stephanopoulos' "journey from idealism to a White House 'burnout' so draining he sought psychiatric help."[4]

Work and activities

Work as a journalist

In 1996, Stephanopoulos left the Clinton administration and became a journalist with ABC News. Stephanopoulos began as a political commentator for This Week, ABC's Sunday morning news show in 1997.[5] He became the host of This Week in 2002.[6] In 2009, ABC announced that Stephanopoulos would become an anchor of Good Morning America, ABC's morning show.[7] Stephanopoulos returned to host This Week in 2011.[8]

In 2007, Stephanopoulos co-moderated a debate during the 2008 Democratic Party presidential primaries.[9] He also co-moderated a debate during the 2012 Republican Party presidential primaries.[10]

In 2024, Stephanopoulos signed a new contract with ABC News, which Variety reported would keep him at the network for "the near term."[11]

On April 13, 2020, Stephanopoulos announced on Good Morning America that he tested positive for coronavirus.[12] COVID-19, also known as coronavirus disease 2019, is the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The first confirmed case of the disease in the United States was announced on January 21, 2020.
