George Trovato was a candidate for the District 3 seat on the Volusia County School Board in Florida. He faced Stan Schmidt and Linda Cuthbert in the general election on August 26, 2014. None of the three candidates received 50 percent of the vote in the general election. As one of the top two vote-getters, Trovato advanced to the runoff election on November 4, 2014. He was defeated by the Cuthbert in that election.

While the school board is a nonpartisan office, Trovato was previously a 2012 Republican candidate for District 27 of the Florida House of Representatives.

The August 26, 2014, general election in Volusia County featured three seats up for election. Larry Candeto, John M. Hill, Don Sarro, Chris Sorensen and Patricia W. Whites were running to replace Candace Lankford, who did not file for the District 1 election. None of the five candidates received 50 percent of the vote, so John M. Hill and Don Sarro, the top two vote-getters, advanced to the runoff election on November 4, 2014. The District 3 race was determined by the runoff election as well, featuring candidates Linda Cuthbert and George Trovato, who received more votes than incumbent Stan Schmidt in the general election. In the District 5 race, challenger Melody Johnson defeated incumbent Diane J. Smith.

Trovato made the following statements regarding campaign issues on his campaign website and Facebook page:

Salary donation

Trovato has pledged to give his salary to vocational programs in the county if he is elected.[2]

Vocational Education

Vocational Education must be available to ALL students in Volusia County. Today the School Board leadership allows only students with a 3.0 or higher to attend these academes. Encourage students to seek higher levels of education in both colleges and trade schools to achieve the high paying jobs of today![3]

Job readiness

Volusia County should have an open line of communications with industry and aggressively match up talented vocational skilled students with newly developing STEM job positions. Students should be able to obtain both relevant training and certifications or licensing while attending high school. I will aggressively seek JOB READINESS for the students in Volusia County.[3]

Testing

Volusia County's District 3 had in 2013 over 10,000 discipline referrals from its 3 high schools alone. Stress and a lack of vocational training programs have created student apathy and low teacher moral. I will work continually for job readiness and gather the outside resources to help 3rd graders learn how to read. In 2014, 49% of the 3rd graders who took the FCAT reading exam...FAILED. Volusia County schools can do better![3]
