There were several special elections scheduled for the state of Georgia in 2013.

State Senate District 14
- Sen. Barry Loudermilk (R) resigned in order to focus on his Congressional campaign. A special election was called for November 5, with a runoff scheduled for December 3. Matt Laughridge and Bruce Thompson faced off in the December 3 runoff election, and Thompson won. No party primaries were held for this election. Candidates had from September 16 to September 18 to file certified nomination papers.[1]
State Senate District 11
- John Bulloch (R) resigned his District 11 seat in the Georgia State Senate on December 6, 2012. While he did not initially provide a reason, Bulloch had been hospitalized with meningitis the previous October. Bulloch was re-elected on November 6, 2012, unopposed. A special election took place on January 8, 2013.[2][3] As no candidate won more than 51 percent in the election, the top two vote-getters, Dean Burke and Mike Keown, headed to a runoff on February 5, which Burke won.[4][5]
State Senate District 21
- Chip Rogers (R) resigned his District 21 seat in the Georgia State Senate effective December 5, 2012, to take a job with Georgia Public Broadcasting. The special election took place on January 8, 2013. Brandon Beach (R) defeated Sean Jerguson (R) to win the seat.[6][7][8][9]

- Bill Hamrick (R) resigned his District 30 seat in the Georgia State Senate following his appointment as a Superior Court judge on the Coweta Judicial Circuit in September 2012. A special election was held to fill the vacancy on January 8, 2013, with a primary on November 6, 2012.[10] With no candidate winning a majority in the Republican primary, the top two vote-getters proceeded to a runoff on December 4, 2012, which Mike Dugan won.[11] Dugan easily defeated James Camp (L) to take the seat.[12]

- Rep. Donna Sheldon (R) resigned in order to focus on her Congressional campaign. A special election was called for November 5, with a runoff scheduled for December 3. Teresa Cantrell and Chuck Efstration faced off in the December 3 runoff election, and Efstration won. No party primaries were held for this election. Candidates had from September 16 to September 18 to file certified nomination papers.[13]
State House District 127
- Rep. Quincy Murphy (D) passed away on August 2 after a battle with lung cancer. A special election was called for November 5, with a runoff if necessary on December 3. Diane B. Evans and Brian Prince faced off in the December 3 runoff election, and Prince won. No party primaries were held for this election. Candidates had from September 16 to September 18 to file certified nomination papers.[14][15]
State House District 100
- Rep. Brian Thomas (D) resigned to accept a position with Natural Resources Group in Lamoine, Maine. A special election was called for November 5, with a runoff scheduled for December 3 if necessary. Dewey McClain won the November 5 special election. No party primaries were held for this election. Candidates had from September 16 to September 18 to file certified nomination papers.[16][17]

- Robert Stokely (R) won election to Georgia House of Representatives District 71 on November 6, 2012. However, on December 14, he stated he would not be accepting the position in order to serve as a Coweta County Magistrate Judge instead. A special election to fill the seat was held February 5, 2013. Candidates had until January 9 to qualify. As no candidate won 50 percent of the vote, the top two-vote-getters - Thomas G. Crymes and David J. Stover - met in a runoff on March 5, 2013, which Stover won.[18][19][20][21]
State House District 21
- State Rep. Sean Jerguson (R) ran for the District 21 state senate seat left vacant when Chip Rogers (R) resigned in December 2012. Once his candidacy was certified, Jerguson had to resign his seat in the House in order to run for the senate. A special election for Jerguson's seat took place on January 8, 2013.[22][8][23] As no candidate took more than 51 percent of the vote, a runoff between the top two vote-getters, Brian Laurens and Scot Turner, took place on February 5, 2013, which Turner won.[24][5]

Important voting information
- Georgia uses an open primary system, meaning voters are not required to declare a party preference when registering to vote.
- Registration must be completed at least 28 days prior to the election that you wish to vote in.
- Georgia passed legislation in 2012 authorizing online voter registration, but a system has not yet been implemented.

Voting early

Georgia is one of 34 states that permits early voting with no specific restrictions as to who can vote early. Early voting is held Monday through Friday in the week immediately preceding the election.[25]
Elections Performance Index
Georgia ranked 27th out of the 50 states and District of Columbia in the Pew Charitable Trusts' Elections Performance Index (EPI), based on the 2012 elections. The EPI examined election administration performance and assigned an average percentage score based on 17 indicators of election performance. These indicators were chosen in order to determine both the convenience and integrity of these three phases of an election: registration, voting and counting. Georgia received an overall score of 64 percent.[26]
