Recall reports

An effort to recall Gerald Antinoro in Storey County, Nevada, from his position as sheriff was launched in November 2016. Signatures were certified in February 2017 and the recall was set for April 11, 2017. The recall effort was defeated by voters.[1]

Recall supporters alleged that the county had been required to pay for an investigator to look into sexual harassment claims against Antinoro and for settlements in two wrongful termination cases. Antinoro said that he had done nothing wrong and that those who sought his recall wanted him out so that they could control the sheriff's office.[2]

Recall supporters

A group of residents initiated the recall due to the money spent by the county in settling employees' claims against Antinoro. "He has created, basically, an HR cesspool in the sheriff's department because he ... has a tendency to work his power on his subordinates," said Kris Thompson, a recall organizer. "And that has a financial cost to the county."[3][4]

"A highly qualified independent workplace investigator hired by Storey County found that Antinoro had engaged in repeated acts of sexual harassment of a married female subordinate," said Thompson in a statement released by the group. The statement also said that Antinoro did not attend the sexual harassment training that was conducted by the county, that he mistreated a subordinate who was campaigning against him, and that the county was required to pay $144,000 to settle two wrongful termination claims under Antinoro's leadership.[5]

Recall opponents

Antinoro released a statement about the recall effort in November 2016. An excerpt from that statement is below.

The recent announcement of a recall petition against me is a continuing attempt by specific interests to control the operations of the Sheriff’s Office. Starting with the last election in 2014, said interests have made countless allegations, filed lawsuits, proffered false statements, twisted information, and used the media and county commission meetings as platforms of attack. This is just one more in a long list; all the while being very short on factual information or evidence. In short, they are creating their own narrative – say something long enough and loud enough and people will begin to believe it even in the absence of proof.[6]
