An effort to recall Mayor Glenda McDonald did not go to a vote in Highland Park, Michigan.

Recall supporters

The recall effort was organized by Robert Davis. The Detroit Metro Times reported that petitions listed the following as grounds for recalling McDonald:[1]

  • She uses on-duty police officers to chauffeur her around;
  • she allegedly recommended that the city council approve a water agreement that resulted in an increase in residents’ utility bills; and
  • she declined to veto the water agreement.

No specific grounds are required for recall in Michigan. To get a recall on the ballot in Michigan, recall supporters must collect signatures equal in number to 25% of voters in the jurisdiction in the last gubernatorial election. They have 60 days between the collection of the first signature and the collection of the last signature on the petition. Recall petitions are eligible to collect signatures for 180 days.[2][3][4]

The Wayne County Election Commission approved the petition for circulation on February 14, 2024.[5] Recall organizers had until August 12, 2024, to submit about 500 valid signatures to put the recall on the ballot.
