Education

Cotton received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in 1989. He earned his J.D. from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law in 1994.[3]

Career

Cotton was a law clerk and court officer for the 52-1 District Court in Oakland County from May 1992 to February 1995. He worked as a research attorney for the State Judicial Council from 1995 to 1997. He has been an attorney in private practice since 1997.[3]

Probate contingency case

In November 2012, Cotton was ordered by Probate Judge Jennie E. Barkey to repay $16,500 for a fee paid by one of his clients. Though there is no outright prohibition against attorneys receiving contingency in probate settlement cases, a written contract for the fee is required. Without that document, Judge Barkey found that Cotton was improperly paid a contingency fee by his client.[4]
