Dillard ran for election as Michigan Secretary of State in 2014. He initially pursued the attorney general position, but switched races in late July 2014. In a party conference call, Dillard noted that his decision avoided an intra-party fight with attorney general candidate Mark Totten and filled an empty spot on the ballot for Democrats.[2] The general election took place on November 4, 2014.
