California: In his first judicial pick, Governor Jerry Brown nominated Goodwin Liu to the California Supreme Court today. Lui was thrice nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit by President Barack Obama. The first two times, the nomination was returned to the President by the U.S. Senate. The most recent, Liu withdrew the nomination himself.[1]

In today's appointment announcement, Brown said, "Professor Liu is an extraordinary man and a distinguished legal scholar and teacher. He is a nationally-recognized expert on constitutional law and has experience in private practice, government service and in the academic community. I know that he will be an outstanding addition to our state supreme court."[2]
