Governing magazine is a nonpartisan magazine that seeks to provide information to public officials and professionals about politics and current events.[1]
Circulation
According to e.Republic, the media a research company that owns Governing, the magazine had a circulation of 85,000 copies, and the website had 9.9 million annual page views as of 2016.[2]
History
Governing magazine was first published in 1987. The magazine's content oriented toward a readership of elected and appointed political officials, as well as professionals such as lawyers and educators. Governing was initially owned by Congressional Quarterly Roll Call, but was acquired by e.Republic, a media research company, in 2009. e.Republic focuses "exclusively on state and local government and education," and also owns Government Technology, Emergency Management, and the Center for Digital Government.[1][3]
In 2011, the Governing Institute, an offshoot of Governing magazine, was founded "with the aim to advance better government by improving performance and outcomes through research, decision support and executive education."[1]
Work
Governing magazine content includes a cover story, a "Features" section, an "Observer" section, a "Politics and Public Policy" section, and a final section titled "Problem Solver." Each section centers around political issues or current news stories. According to Governing, the magazine provides "state and local leaders with the non-partisan information, insight and intelligence needed to govern effectively."[4]

Governing has received "four National Magazine Awards nominations, the Folio Editorial Excellence Award and in 2011, the prestigious Jesse H. Neal award from American Business Media for exceptional editorial content."[1]

- In the 2012 Erdos & Morgan survey, Governing.com was "top rated - #1 - among state and local leaders in three categories - most visited (ahead of NCSL, Fox News, Politico, and CNN), most objective and most current."[1]
- In 2011 the Erdos & Morgan Opinion Leaders Survey stated that Governing magazine was the second "most widely read print publication for state and local government leaders after USA Today." The survey also showed that the magazine was the third most influential after The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times.[1]
