The county government of San Diego County is located in San Diego, California. The county was first established in 1850 as one of the original 27 counties in California.[1] It covers a total of 4,206 square miles in southern California.[2]

Special districts are a form of local government that exist to fulfill a specific purpose within a certain geographic area. This region can be as large as a county or smaller than a city block. Special districts have the power to tax their local residents in order to fund operational expenditures. Although a special district may be formed for any stated purpose, the most common examples include library, hospital, transportation, airport, utility, conservation, sanitation, fire control, and flood control districts.

San Diego County Office of Education

The San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) is governed by a board that has five members who each represent a specific district. Each director is elected to a four-year term. The SDCOE is a separate entity from the San Diego Unified School District. The following is the office of education's mission, as stated on its website:

San Diego Community College District

The San Diego Community College District (SDCCD) is governed by a five-member board of trustees. Trustees are elected by district to four-year terms.[8] SDCCD's mission, according to its website, "is to provide accessible, high-quality learning experiences, and undergraduate education at an affordable price to meet the educational needs of the San Diego community and the state."[9]

South Bay Water District

South Bay Water oversees water procurement from the Sweetwater River Basin, runoff captures, and freshwater wells in National City, Bonita, and Chula Vista.[10] The seven-member South Bay Irrigation District Board of Directors consists of two appointees by the mayor and National City and five elected members. The board's elected members serve four-year terms.


Southwestern Community College District

The Southwestern Community College District Governing Board is a five-member board that oversees budget policy and operations for Southwestern College. Each board member is elected to a four-year term.[11] The district switched from holding at-large elections to by-district elections as part of the general elections in 2022 and 2024.[12]
