The county government of Bexar County is located in San Antonio, Texas. The county was established in 1836 and covers a total of 1,239 square miles.[1]

The commissioners court functions as the county's primary legislative and policy-making body. Most boards also control county land usage, oversee environmental issues and possess executive powers, meaning they have the authority to appoint or remove departmental heads. The Bexar County Commissioners Court is made up of the county judge, who serves as the county's chief executive officer, and four commissioners. Appraisal district

The Bexar County Appraisal District is served by five members appointed by the governing bodies of eligible taxing units participating in the appraisal district and three members elected at large in a general election. If the county tax assessor-collector is not appointed to the board they serve as an ex-officio member.[3] The role of the board members includes "establishing the appraisal district office, hiring a Chief Appraiser, appointing the Taxpayer Liaison Officer, appointing the Appraisal Review Board, adopting the district’s biennial reappraisal plan, and adopting the district’s annual operating budget. The board of directors have no authority to set values or appraisal methods."[4]
