The county commission (previously known as the board of chosen freeholders) functions as the county's primary legislative and policy-making body. County commissioners are tasked with approving an annual budget, enacting ordinances, approving county contracts, and making appointments to public offices. Essex County has nine commissioners who are elected to three-year terms. Four are elected at large, while five freeholders are selected via by-district election.[4] On January 1, 2021, the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders was renamed the Essex County Board of County Commissioners.[5]
