The county government of Jefferson County is located in Birmingham, Alabama. The county was established in 1819. It covers a total of 1,119 square miles in north-central Alabama.[1]

2024
Jefferson County, Alabama, held general elections for county treasurer, county constables, county circuit clerk, probate court judges, circuit court judges, district court judges on November 5, 2024. A primary was scheduled for March 5, 2024. The filing deadline for the primary was November 10, 2023, and the filing deadline for the general election was March 5, 2024.
2023
Jefferson County, Alabama, held a special general election for County Commission District 5 on July 18, 2023. A runoff, if needed, was scheduled for August 8, 2023. The filing deadline for this election was June 27, 2023.
2022
Jefferson County, Alabama, held general elections for district attorney, sheriff, county commission, circuit court judges, and district court judges on November 8, 2022. A primary was scheduled for May 24, 2022. A primary runoff was scheduled for June 21, 2022. The filing deadline for this election was January 28, 2022.
The 10th Judicial Circuit Court Place 14 judicial seat was removed from the general election ballot. After Tiara Hudson won the primary for the judicial seat, the Alabama Judicial Resources Allocation Commission transferred the judgeship from Jefferson County to Madison County. As a result, the general election for the seat was canceled. The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) and the ACLU of Alabama sued to have the judgeship restored to Jefferson County. Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Jimmy B. Pool dismissed the case.[2][3][4]

Jefferson County, Alabama, held general elections for treasurer, tax collector, tax assessor, constables, district court, and circuit court on November 3, 2020. A primary was scheduled for March 3, 2020. A primary runoff was scheduled for July 14, 2020. The filing deadline for this election was November 8, 2019.

Jefferson County, Alabama, held general elections for district attorney, county sheriff, county tax assessor, county tax collector, county commissioners, and probate judges on November 6, 2018. If a race had multiple candidates for a party nomination, a primary was held on June 5, 2018.

The board of commissioners functions as the county's primary legislative and policy-making body. Most boards also control county land usage, oversee environmental issues and possess executive powers, meaning they have the authority to appoint or remove departmental heads. Jefferson County has five supervisors who are elected by district to four-year terms.[5]
