Governor Daniels appoints second female Supreme Court justice in Indiana history
September 17, 2012
Indianapolis, Indiana: Governor Mitch Daniels has selected Loretta H. Rush to fill the vacancy on the Indiana Supreme Court left by Frank Sullivan, Jr.[1] Sullivan left the court to take a teaching position at the Robert H. McKinney School of Law at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.
Rush was the only female applicant left in the pool of three finalists. The initial applications for the position included sixteen women, or 72.7 percent of all applicants. Governor Daniels had faced continued pressure to select a female justice, as Indiana was one of only three state Supreme Courts without a female member; the remaining womanless courts are Idaho and Iowa.[2]
Rush is only the second woman to serve on Indiana's highest court, the first was Myra Consetta Selby, who served from 1995 through 1999.[3] Before joining the court, Rush served as an Indiana Superior Court judge in Tippecanoe County from 1998 through 2012. Prior to this, Rush served as a private practice attorney. Rush received her undergraduate degree from Purdue University and her J.D. from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law in Bloomington, Indiana.
