Governor Perdue reappoints judges defeated in 2010 election
March 28, 2011
North Carolina: Earlier this month, Governor Bev Perdue appointed two district court judges to replace H. William Constangy and Hugh B. Lewis, who were elected to the 26th District Superior Court in the 2010 election. To succeed the victors, she appointed Jena P. Culler and Tyyawdi B. Hands, who were both defeated as they ran to retain their seats in the same election.[1]
Jena P. Culler was originally appointed to the court in 2008. She was defeated by Donald Cureton, Jr. in the 2010 general election. With the governor's reappointment, Culler will now need to run for the seat in the 2012 general election.[2]
Tyyawdi B. Hands was appointed to the court in March 2009 by Governor Perdue. She was defeated by Sean Smith in the 2010 election, winning only 45 percent of the vote. She will also need to run for her seat in the 2012 general election if she wishes to continue serving.[2]
Of the appointments, Perdue said, "I am pleased to reappoint Judges Culler and Hands back to the District Court bench. They have earned the respect of their colleagues and their service will be a great benefit to this State."[1]
