Governor paves way for childcare workers' union

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island: Gov. Lincoln Chafee has signed legislation allowing for the unionization of private contractors providing state-subsidized childcare in their homes. Under the new legislation, anyone who was paid by state for providing home-based childcare services from March 1, 2013, through Aug. 30, 2013, will be allowed to vote on whether they want to be represented by the Service Employees International Union. According to reports, the vote should take place within the next two months. The move towards a childcare workers' union is being opposed by both the Rhode Island Center for Freedom & Prosperity and the National Right to Work Foundation.[1]
